Tips on Indoor Plants and their Benefits

Indoor Plants are a great addition to any indoor or covered space. They can create a natural, organic interest and provide privacy or coverage in an any space.  The benefit of indoor plants extend beyond the aesthetic value; they can purify indoor air from toxins as well!  Nasa conducted a study to show the toxins that are removed from indoor spaces because of plants! At Palmer’s, we love to create unique indoor spaces using plants and cool containers or vessels. To get you started we’ve come up with some general rules for indoor plants.

  • The brighter the colors in the leaves, the more light the plant typically needs inside, for instance, a green Dracaena will require less light then a Variegated (green and white striped) Dracaena
  • The less light a plant receives, the less it will “drink”, as the soil seems to stay moist and it tends to grow a little slower.
  • It is always best to “stage” the plant inside the container of your choice to insure proper watering. Keep the indoor plant in its black plastic container and place it in a saucer inside the decorative container and top the plant with moss. This allows you to remove the plant for watering as well!
  • Never let a plant “sit” in water in its saucer for more than 12 hours. Dump whatever water is left after that time period.
  • You can often bring lower light plants into higher light, but it is not recommended  to bring higher light plants into lower light.
  • Most plants like their soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.
  • Some easy Low-light plants are: Dracaena, Pothos, Agleaonema, ZZ plant
  • Some Easy Hi-Light plants are: Variegated Dracaenas, bromeliads, Anthurium, Spath (Peace Lily), Bird of Paradisenasa plant guide
